Jiaxiu Tower in Guiyang

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-26 16:39:35

Jiaxiu Tower is the landmark of Guizhou's capital Guiyang and also the
symbol of Guiyang culture. Before Jiaxiu Tower was built, Ma Yanxi,
disciple of Wang Yangming, a philosopher and educator of the Ming Dynasty
(1368-1644), built Qiyun Pavilion on the site to give lectures. Zhang
Sanfeng, a well-known Taoist, once paid a tour there and predicted that
the location would be a fair place with outstanding talents myriad and
beautiful scenes. In 1598, the 26th year of the Wanli Reign (1573-1620)
of the Ming Dynasty, Jiang Dongzhi, governor of Guizhou, built the Jiaxiu
Tower with an implied meaning of good performance in the imperial civil
examinations. As expected, three Guizhou candidates were titled Number
One Scholar in the highest imperial examination and two of them once
lived near the Nanming River which flowed under the Jiaxiu Tower.

Naoyu Festival is a festival to drive away evil spirits and pay for peace
and harvest. During such a festival, a respected elder would scatter some
leaves (poison) into the river and a couple of men (fish) would jump into
the river and, pretending to be poisoned, roll in the river and then on
the beach head, symbolizing that evil spirits have been driven away.

Survey of Beijing's rich residents

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-14 14:42:43

Chinanews, Beijing, July 14 - During this year's May Day golden week, a
Beijing property developer organized buyers of his units to form a "Hong
Kong Spending Spree Tour". More than 30 Beijingers spent on average
50,000 Yuan per person (6,045 USD) during the five day tour, running up a
tab of 2 million Yuan for the group. These Beijingers' carefree ways with
money shocked even the rich residents of Hong Kong.
How many rich people are there in Beijing? The Beijing Academy of Social
Sciences conducted a survey amongst the city's rich citizens under a
course titled "Analysis and Forecast of Economic Situation in Beijing"
and found that Beijing's high-income families have total assets reaching
2.356 million Yuan on average, with 66.2% in property assets and 33.8% in
financial assets.
The "included group" in this survey are families who purchased commercial
property in the city's 8th district and has annual income of at least
50,000 Yuan. In 301 such households randomly selected, average household
size is 2.8 persons, average living quarter size is 101.34 square meters
and 34.22% of these families have their own cars.
Survey finds that Beijing's high income families have 22 cars per 100
households. Extrapolating from this, Beijing's millionaires number
between 1.5 million to 2 million. Those who own a car on average pay
199,500 for each car.
In 1999, the average family's life insurance bill averaged 2,065 Yuan and
their financial risk insurance tab was 1,185 Yuan. This type of family
spent an average of 11,301 Yuan per capita for their children's education.

China has strong energy production and consumption system

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-13 13:38:28

Chinanews, July 13 - According to the Outlook Weekly, Xu Dingming,
director general of the Energy Bureau under the National Development and
Reform Commission (NDRC), stated that China has abundant energy resources
as well as strong production and consumption system in coal, petroleum,
natural gas and electric power industry.
At the recent release of "China Energy Statistical Yearbook 2004" and "BP
Statistical Review of World Energy 2005" jointly held by NDRC's Energy
Bureau and the Department of Industrial and Transport Statistics under
the National Bureau of Statistics, Xu said that China has made great
achievements in oil and gas exploration in southwestern and northwestern
regions. The country's oil and gas consumption can depend, to a great
extent, on its own exploration, exploitation and production.
The latest resource assessment by Chinese experts proves that China's oil
and natural gas resources have greatly increased over that in the
previous assessment. Both oil and gas resources are growing continuously.
In terms of coal industry, China is breaking barriers of region, sector
and ownership and building large coal production groups and bases. With
respect to electric power industry, 65 million kilowatts of installed
capacity is predicted to be put into production this year. By the end of
this year, China's total installed capacity is expected to exceed 500
million kilowatts. At the same time, China is actively developing new
energy such as nuclear power and hydropower.
Xu added that the Chinese government is strengthening its guiding efforts
on energy, implementing formulated energy strategies and plans and
enhancing domestic energy exploration and exploitation.
