Navy officers and soldiers stationed in Shanghai set up a maritime
territory base point boundary stone on Sheshan Island out of the estuary
of the Yangtze River on Nov. 1, 2005. This is Shanghai's only maritime
territory base point. Establishment of this boundary stone marks that the
area 12 sea miles to the east of the base point is territory of China,
and the 200 sea miles beyond is China's exclusive economic zone. All
boundary stones of China are uniformly made by the government and weigh
about 1.5 tons.

Probing the Secrets of the Chinese Marine Corps

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-13 16:05:58

Chinanews, Beijing, Oct. 13 (By Han Haibing & Tao Shelan) - This is a
group of soldiers steeped in mystery, whose footprints can be found in
the depth of the South China Sea and high up on the snowfields in
Northern China. This force does not have a large number of soldiers, but
it is one of five categories of forces in the Chinese Navy.
It is the renowned Chinese Marine Corps. This year is the 25th
anniversary since the inception of the corps, when our reporter paid it a
visit, trying to probe its secrets.
When asked about the original background of the Chinese Marine Corps,
Officer Lee explained that it is a specially equipped force of amphibious
operation, an indispensable strike force fighting for control of the sea.
In China, there are more than 3 million square kilometers of territorial
water with several thousand islands. Reinforcing the construction of the
marine corps is necessary to preserve the integrity and unity of the
nation's maritime rights and its territories.
"The marine corps is a force composed of different military capabilities
which can undertake fast landing, coastal and island defense and the
support of other amphibious battles," said Officers Lee. "The Chinese
Marine Corps includes the infantry, the artillery, armored units,
engineer corps, chemical defense units, communication units, etc. They
have undertaken flood control in 1998, military reviews on National Day,
important war exercises and many other diplomatic assignments, which
showed the glamour of this force as the "army of armies, iron of iron".
The Marine Corps differs from other military units in its characteristic
equipment that combine that used by the army, the navy and the air force.
Weaponry was seen in the camps of the corps, including various automatic
weapons for the infantry, amphibious tanks, amphibious armored vehicles,
self-propelled guns of various calibers, anti-tank missiles and more.
Besides, there is seafaring and landing equipment for amphibious battles,
including attack helicopters in the air as well as new naval landing
crafts and high-speed hovercrafts on the water. It is almost like an
armament exhibition." Officer Lee said proudly, "All made in China!"
Officers in charge of training young recruits told us that amphibious
scouts call for strong bodies and great military skills, which they will
need to defeat the enemies with intelligence and bravery. In combat they
shall know how to use heavy or light weapons, and be able to beat the
enemy in hand-to-hand combat on a beachhead or under water. When in
motion, they should be able to swim more than ten thousand meters across
the ocean loaded with weight, as well as drive a motorcycle, a car, an
amphibious tank, etc. Furthermore, they should possess the skills of
airborne troops.
The Chinese Marine Corps is famous for its strict training. In order to
survive and continuously fight under adverse circumstances, they undergo
many adaptation trainings under various climatic conditions in different
areas. The difficulty and intensity of such training are hard to believe.
"Train for a thousand days, ready for battle any day." The marine corps
will perform many types of realistic war exercises so as to shorten the
distance between practice and reality, improving their rapid response
capabilities and their combat effectiveness as a whole. (End)

BEIJING, Sept. 10 - The 9th China International Investment and Trade Fair

Economic growth reduces poverty

BEIJING, Sept. 3 - China's rapid economic growth has resulted in
tremendous progress in reducing poverty and improving the lives of people
generally, said Mrs. Louise Arbour, high commissioner for human rights of
the United Nations, here Friday.
"Improvement is evident in life expectancy, child mortality and
illiteracy," said the UN official, at a press conference at the end of
her one-week visit in China.
During her stay in Beijing, China's capital, she took part in
commemorations for the tenth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference
on Women and met some Chinese officials including State Councilor Tang
Jiaxuan. She also visited a community correction facility in the city.
"This is a particularly interesting time to come to China. The great
changes China is undergoing hold great promise," she told a group of
Chinese and foreign journalists at the UN compound in downtown Beijing.
China has declared its commitment to human rights and has raised
expectations for the country to match its growing prosperity with a firm
commitment to advancing human rights, at home and abroad, said the UN
official.
During her visit, the Chinese authorities reafirmed their commitment to
reduce vast wealth disparities, promote greater transparency, fight
corruption, strengthen social justice, pursue balanced and sustainable
development, and strengthen the rule of law.

7 groups of young Chinese unwilling to work

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-18 14:00:17

Chinanews, Oct. 18 - Shanghai media reported that according to an
authoritative survey, there are 7 groups of young Chinese who are
unwilling to work. Negative impacts of unemployed youth have become a
hotspot that arouses close attention of all.
The first group is those with low educational level and uncompetitive
skills who can only find a job in medium and low-end labor markets but
are too choosy and unwilling to accept tough low-income jobs. They
account for about 30% of these 7 groups.
The second group is college and university graduates who expect too much
of and are too fastidious about their future posts to settle down with a
job. They constitute some 15% of these 7 groups.
The third group is those who have lost their jobs but unwilling to accept
an offer not better than their former posts. They make up approximately
10% of these 7 groups.
The fourth groups are those who choose to give up their jobs for various
reasons such as too strained work, maladjustment to work environment,
poor interpersonal relationships and further study. They compose around
10% of these 7 groups.
The fifth group is those clouded with illusions of setting up their own
businesses who are unsuccessful in their attempts but unwilling to work
for others. They form circa 15% of these 7 groups.
The sixth group is habitual job hoppers. 95% of new college and
university graduates plan to change their jobs in one year. They are
over-confident about their high educational level and therefore choose to
frequently change their jobs. Unfortunately, however, they often end up
jobless. They build up 10% of these 7 groups.
They last group are only-children who are ready to give up and depend on
their parents, who are able and willing to support them. Thus there is no
need for them to hurry and find a job. They take up 10% of these 7 groups.

Herbal treatment for HIV/AIDS carriers

www.chinanews.cn 2005-09-24 16:32:29

(Source: CRIENGLISH.com)

BEIJING, Sep. 24 - A test program to treat HIV/AIDS carriers with
traditional Chinese medicine has seen preliminary clinical achievements.
According to the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine,
since China launched the program last August, eleven provinces and
municipalities in total have been included.
Compared with the Western-style drugs that may have many side effects and
are too expensive, the cost for traditional Chinese medicine in HIV/AIDS
treatment is relatively low and results in fewer side effects.
According to doctors, the herbal treatment aims to protect and raise
patients' immunity, ease the symptoms so as to secure a better quality of
life.
In contrast, the western style treatment aims to kill the virus. But so
far there hasn't been any kind of medicine proved to be successful in
doing that.
The test program of herbal treatment are part of China's ongoing campaign
to help thousands of HIV/AIDS sufferers with the use of traditional
Chinese medicine as a way to fight the fatal disease.
Liu Wenwu, an official with the State Administration of Traditional
Chinese Medicine, says that the implementation of such test program looks
smooth and promising.
"Since the national test program was launched in August 2004, about 2,700
AIDS patients in the five provinces of Henan, Hebei, Anhui, Hubei and
Guangdong, have got help by June this year. What's more, we are adding 6
more provinces into our coverage this year," said Liu.
The central government has earmarked some 36 million Yuan, or more than
4.5 million US dollars, for the test program.
More than half of which cover the cost for the drugs and the rest will be
used in the training and management of the medical staff.
HIV/AIDS carriers from the pilot areas who voluntarily participate in the
program are receiving free treatment in test clinic bases established in
those provinces.
The local government and hospitals will maintain the privacy of the
volunteer patients and doctors will adopt different therapies to patients
in accordance with their specific conditions.
Doctors say it is also possible to use the combination of western-style
anti-virus drugs with traditional Chinese medicine.
According to Liu Wenwu, herbal treatment for HIV/AIDS carriers has seen
fairly good clinical effects.
"Statistics show that herbal treatment for HIV/AIDS patients evidently
help ease the common symptoms include diarrhea, vomit, weariness.
Traditional Chinese medicine also effectively reduces those side effects
of anti-virus drugs. Patients and their relatives welcome our treatment,
which has enriched the clinic treatment for HIV/AIDS," said Liu.
Liu Wenwu added that in regards to the differences between western-style
and Chinese traditional medicines, the evaluation standards of the two
are different. Chinese traditional medicine experts are establishing a
standardized evaluation system for curative effects, in an effort to
scientifically carry out herbal treatment for HIV/AIDS.
Official statistics show China had 840,000 people infected with HIV by
the end of 2003.
The World Health Organization reveals that over one-third of the
population in developing countries lack access to essential medicine.
Since China has fully integrated traditional medicine into its health
care systems, the provision of safe and effective traditional medicine
therapies could become a critical tool to increase access to the
treatment of HIV/AIDS.
