A few children staying in Xiahuaqiao Town of Hunan's Shaoyang County were
taking photos for their parents who had to start a long journey to work
afar on Feb. 5 so as to keep a loving memory. After a short-term reunion
with their children during the Spring Festival, more than 100,000
laborers from Shaoyang County hurried back to different labor markets
throughout China. Children who could hardly see their parents in a year
were reluctant to say good-bye.

Locals perform dragon dance as part of the consecration ceremony of
dragon in Saiying town, Guizhou province on Jan. 31, 2006. The dragon
dance, also known as the dragon lantern dance, is a unique folk dance in
China. The performers wave props shaped like a dragon to the
accompaniment of drums and gongs, displaying a powerful and majestic
momentum. In the remote past the dragon dance was performed to pray for
rain and now became a major item of entertainment during festivals,
especially the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month.

Young Chinese internet addicts on the rise

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-13 14:36:53

Chinanews, Shijiazhuang, Jan. 13 (By Niu Lin) - Statistics show that
netizens under 35 years of age constitute more than 80% of the 103
million Chinese internet users, while the average age of 20-odd million
online game players is merely 23. Youngsters' indulgence in web games and
internet addiction has become an increasingly prominent social problem.
The recently released 2005 "report on young Chinese internet addicts"
shows that to date, young Chinese web addicts have amounted to
approximately 13.2% of total young netizens, and 13% are inclined to
become internet addicts.
Relevant experts point out that young internet addicts were born largely
owing to unsuccessful education, especially family education. Youths'
addiction to the internet reflects that Chinese family education has
serious problems.
The causes of the above phenomenon lie in that Chinese youths lack
self-control to some extent and wish to ease the pressure in studies,
escape from loneliness and develop a sense of fulfillment through
internet games. The root, however, is the failure of family education,
according to expert analysis.

The Shijiazhuang Railway Station welcomed a "student flow" on January
8th. Nearly 30,000 students swarmed to the ticketing hall and formed long
queues that are rare to see in recent years. As some schools decided not
to book tickets for their students any more, students rush to the
ticketing hall in order to get tickets home as soon as possible. As a
result, the "student flow" phenomenon emerged.

Olympic jade seals to hit stores

(Source: Xinhua)

A sample of the replicas of the jade seal of the Beijing 2008 emblem is
shown at a press conference in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing
Wednesday, December 7, 2005. (Photo: Xinhua)

Dec.8 - Beijing Olympic organizers will make costly replicas of the jade
seal of the Beijing 2008 emblem available to the public, targeting a
potentially huge market of the Olympic collections merchandise.
A total of 2,008 pieces will be for sale from next Tuesday, with a price
tag of 56,000 yuan (about 7,000 US dollars) each, the Beijing Organizing
Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG) announced on Wednesday.
The replicas are made, like the original one, of the same white jade from
Hetian of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, but they are half the size of
the original.
A brocade box, rosewood box inlaid with silver threads, DVD collection,
book and brochure will also be sold along with the jade seal as a set
dubbed 'Treasures of the Beijing Olympic Emblem -- Classic Edition".
The replicas are among the most expensive licensed products of the
Beijing 2008 Games so far since the 2008 licensing program was officially
launched last month after running on a trial basis since August 2004.
The seal of the Beijing Olympic emblem takes the shape of the imperial
seal signifying the highest authority in Chinese history during the
reigns of Kangxi and Qianlong Emperors of the Qing Dynasty (1662-1795),
one of the flourishing periods in history.

Chinanews, Dec. 7 - Jiang Xiaohua, director of the Foreign Capital
Poverty Alleviation Management Center of the State Council Leading Group
Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development, said at today's Conference

part in large-scale comprehensive poverty alleviation programs,
experimental, pilot and model projects, institution and capability
construction programs and cooperation on research.
Jiang said that the implementation of poverty alleviation program has
increased the gross investment in poverty reduction and development,
offset the shortage of domestic capital, improved the production and
living conditions in poverty-stricken regions, elevated the income and
standards of living of the poor, and accelerated the progress of China's
poverty reduction. According to incomplete statistics, poverty
alleviation projects conducted or supervised by the Foreign Capital
Poverty Alleviation Management Center absorbed more than US$800 million
foreign capital in the past ten years, which increased the investment and
played an important role in central and western regions.
Results of the poverty monitoring survey conducted by the National Bureau
of Statistics show that thanks to the World Bank loan program, 61 poor
counties in China's southwestern regions and the Qinling-Dabashan
mountainous region have sharply alleviated the poverty with a speed
faster than China's average level. Per capita net income in villages
involved in the program has increased considerably and self-development
ability of poverty-stricken rural households has been elevated visibly.
