Development and Planning Department Director Han Jin of China's Ministry
of Education announced recently that by 2010, China would strive to
achieve free compulsory education in rural areas. The plan is now under
gradual implementation with 36 million students in rural areas entitled
to the "two free and one subsidy" policy. This policy aims to provide
rural students receiving compulsory education whose families encounter
financial difficulties with free textbooks and free incidentals, as well
as subsidy for boarders' living expenses, so as to furthest guarantee
that poor students could complete their studies.
